National and international human rights experts will take part in the activity.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The Justice Studies Center of the Americas<\/strong> (JSCA), the Due Process of Law Foundation<\/strong> (DPLF) and the Universidad de Chile Human Rights Center<\/strong> invite anyone interested to participate in the seminar \u201cStandards of judicial investigation of serious human rights violations in contexts of social protest in Latin America<\/em>.\u201d The event will be held on Thursday, April 15 at 2:20 p.m. local time.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The goals of the activity include: sharing international standards for the investigation of serious human rights violations in contexts of social protest; showcasing experiences with serious human rights violations in other countries of the region; and analyzing the progress made and reports on the investigation and prosecution of human rights violations during Chile\u2019s social protests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event will be divided into four thematic modules<\/a> and will be broadcast on the official JSCA YouTube<\/a> channel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The national and international experts who will participate in the seminar include JSCA Executive Director Jaime Arellano, DPLF Executive Director Katya Salazar and the Assistant Director of the Universidad de Chile Human Rights Center, Felipe Abbott.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Modules <\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first module will feature the collaboration of the Honorable Oscar Parra, a magistrate for Colombia\u2019s Special Peace Jurisdiction, and Claudia Martin, Co-Director of the American University Center for Human Rights & Humanitarian Law.<\/strong>Universidad de Chile Professor Salvador Millaleo<\/strong> will moderate the panel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next, Universidad Carlos III and Externado (Colombia) Professor Juan Pablo Hinestrosa V\u00e9lez; attorney and former ad hoc prosecutor for the Fujimori-Montesinos cases, Antonio Maldonado; and the Director of the Francisco Su\u00e1rez SJ University Center for Dignity and Justice (Mexico), Alejandro Nu\u00f1o<\/strong> will lead the second module, which will be moderated by the Director of the DPLF Program on Impunity and Serious Human Rights Violations, Leonor Arteaga.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The third module will feature the Chief of the Metropolitan Region Office of the Chilean National Human Rights Institute, Beatriz Contreras; the attorney for Londres 38 and human rights specialist Karinna Fern\u00e1ndez; and Universidad de Chile attorney and professor Francisco Bustos.<\/strong> Alejandra Bocardo, a researcher and the co-author of the Evaluation of the Chilean Justice System in Response to the Human Rights Violations Committed in the Context of Social Protests (2020),<\/strong> will moderate the discussion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the final module, JSCA researcher and co-author of the Chilean Justice System in Response to the Human Rights Violations Committed in the Context of Social Protests (2020), Gonzalo Fibla<\/strong>, will lead the discussion of the proposals and courses of action that the experts invited to the event will present. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In December 2020, JSCA, DPLF and the Universidad de Chile Human Rights Center and Legal Defense Office<\/strong> disseminated the results of a research project that assessed the Chilean justice system\u2019s response to the human rights violations that occurred in the context of the social protests that began on October 18, 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
